Disney’s Hollywood Studios is turning 28 years old this week! While the park might not be its best self right now, the future is bright. And so is the past . . .

In honor of the park’s anniversary, special guest Jeff DePaoli joins us this week as we go back in time and take a virtual tour of Disney-MGM Studios as it existed in 1994, just months after Sunset Boulevard debuted to the public. We look back fondly on extinct attractions like the Backstage Studio Tour and the Magic of Disney Animation, and we discover what the park was like before Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Star Wars made their grand entrances.

Plus, Jeff gives us the scoop on Aulani, Disney’s Hawaiian resort and spa, and shares all about the unforgettable trip he took there. Then, in the segment “Did That Just Happen?” we each share odd, funny stories from the parks.

93: Overlay or Over-nay? – Evaluating Disney’s Shoehorning Strategy

What used to be Maelstrom is now Frozen Ever After. The original show Rivers of Light has been put on hold, and a “Jungle Book” show has debuted in its place. Now, rumors are flying that attractions like Mission: SPACE and Tower of Terror will be given “Guardians of the Galaxy” overlays. Is the age of original attractions over?

On this week’s show, we dive in to the topic of Disney overlays and share our thoughts on this latest trend. Then, with our tongues firmly in our cheeks, we each give five ideas for how to either improve or ruin current Walt Disney World attractions by overlaying them with Disney films and characters.

In the segment “Munchies and Merch,” we discuss the food items and merchandise at the parks that have our attention. Plus, we play “Take 5,” a game in which we use just five words to express our feelings on categories such as the weather in July and what the Maelstrom trolls are up to now. We try to plus Halloween Time at Walt Disney World by answering questions like, “If you could hide somewhere in Walt Disney World and scare people, where would you do it?” and, “If you had to add a fall or Halloween ‘twist’ to a classic Disney snack, what would you do?”

In the segment Munchies and Merch, we each share about a fall snack and a spooky piece of merchandise we’d like to get our hands on, and in another Mad Chatter game, Matt and Derek try to match movie quotes with the villains who said them.
